Computational Thermodynamics: The Calphad Method Overview

Phase diagrams are used in materials research and engineering to understand the interrelationship between composition, microstructure and process conditions. In complex systems, computational methods such as CALPHAD are employed to model thermodynamic properties for each phase and simulate multicomponent phase behavior. Written by recognized experts in the field, this is the first introductory guide to the CALPHAD method, providing a theoretical and practical approach. Building on core thermodynamic principles, this book applies crystallography, first principles methods and experimental data to computational phase behavior modeling using the CALPHAD method. With a chapter dedicated to creating thermodynamic databases, the reader will be confident in assessing, optimizing and validating complex thermodynamic systems alongside database construction and manipulation. Several case studies put the methods into a practical context, making this suitable for use on advanced materials design and engineering courses and an invaluable reference to those using thermodynamic data in their research or simulations.

Computational Modelling & Electronic Engineering in Acoustics: Basic Principles and Applications Overview

The application of computer modelling using numerical techniques is a fast developing field in acoustics. Many practical acoustic problems, such as room acoustics, environmental noise propagation and transducer design, cannot be solved by closed form analytical solutions and in the past have been handled using simplified approximations which are very limited in the scope of application and detail and accuracy which they can provide. Numerical techniques in acoustics have undergone tremendous development over the past two decades, spurred on by the need for more accurate and detailed modelling and made practical by the rapid increase in affordable desktop computing power.

The major numerical techniques which can be applied to acoustic transducer design, room acoustics prediction, environmental noise modelling, and other general modelling of noise radiation and diffraction are brought together. The basic principles are covered, but the book emphasises the application of the techniques and is illustrated with cases. This makes it a reference for undergraduates, postgraduates who are starting their research, and engineers in industry who need to find a solution for a specific practical problem.

Blender Foundations: The Essential Guide to Learning Blender 2.6

Discount Blender Foundations: The Essential Guide to Learning Blender 2.6 :>>> limited time offer!

For the longest time the Blender Foundation folks have developed amazing software, premiered ground-breaking animations (Elephant's Dream, Big Buck Bunny, and soon Sintel), and have also delivered consistently strong documentation (in part, perhaps, because the availability of the source code makes it possible for documentation people to "see for themselves" how the software they are trying to document actually works). But when it came to books, those physical manifestations of documentation printed on paper, that was the Blender Foundation's Achilles Heel. The lucid text was betrayed by the most muddy, low-contrast, blocked-up print images I've seen since learning for myself the difference between screen gamma, display gamma and print gamma.

Finally, there is a book that not only documents the latest and greatest that the Blender Foundation has to offer, but it does so with figures and illustrations that actually add to the text instead of insulting it. Good colors, good contrast, good image detail: all these things encourage learning everything about Blender, rather than just the highlights and forgetting about the things lost in the shadows.

If you've tried learning Blender before and found yourself hopelessly lost, give this book a try. The clear text and much clearer illustrations may unlock the secrets you have been hoping to know!

Blender Foundations: The Essential Guide to Learning Blender 2.6 Overview

Blender Foundations is the definitive resource for getting started with 3D art in Blender, one of the most popular 3D/Animation tools on the market . With the expert insight and experience of Roland Hess, noted Blender expert and author, animators and artists will learn the basics starting with the revised 2.6 interface, modeling tools, sculpting, lighting and materials through rendering, compositing and video editing. Some of the new features covered include the completely re-thought interface, the character animation and keying system, and the smoke simulator.

LightWave 3D 8 Texturing (Wordware Game and Graphics Library)

Discount LightWave 3D 8 Texturing (Wordware Game and Graphics Library) :>>> limited time offer!

I got this book because I was very impressed by Leighs texturing tutorial she has on her website. On the positive side she does cover the basic concepts of shader settings and does so in a way that you can apply it to any 3D app youre using (Lightwave is old and obsolete 3D app, infact Leigh doesnt use Lightwave anymore). But I was a tad bit disappointed that it didnt go more into photoshop painting technics for creating textures (that might be an unfair critisism since this book is part of a Lightwave series). But the thing that really annoyed me about the book is that it was that the pics were all in B&W, and so color copys of the pics are included on the CD to be viewed on a computer. I mean why not just make this book an ebook and eliminate passing between a book and computer altogether? That is pretty cheap of the publisher to not print this book in color.

LightWave 3D 8 Texturing (Wordware Game and Graphics Library) Overview

Here's my experience before this wonderful book. I have been a hack programmer for close to 30 years (started with the Apple ][, VIC-20 and the Commodore 64.) I've written a few small games over the years in basic and one in C (after reading Andre LaMothe's wonderful books on game programming.) I am pretty proficient in Visual Basic .Net (I write and sell CRM software for salespeople online). I've recently wanted to write some small games again and actually purchased a Mac and IPhone to try to write games for it but found Objective C very cumbersome. So, with that--I--on a whim and after reading reviews--bought Learning XNA 3.0 and what a great purchase it was for me! With my "hack" experience, I just want the facts--here's how you put a sprite on the screen, here's how you move it, here's how you check for collisions, here's how you play a sound. This book was perfect for me. As of right now, I have no interest in 3D programming and have skipped the chapters on that topic but found the 2D programming chapters to be fantastic. I jumped right in and was moving a stupid little sprite around with my xbox controller in no time. I was animating sprites a little later. 3 days later (with no C# experience) I have written a "Kaboom" clone that rocks (remember Kaboom on the Atari 30 years ago?) What a thrill it is to see my little game running on my xbox 360! It is fun and you know what? I plan on fixing it up a little and seeing if I can sell some copies on xbox live! Next in line is a Robotron clone and a clone of the old Odyssey 2 video game U.F.O. This is some fun stuff--my CRM programming is suffering because I am having a blast programming games! Buy this book if you have any interest in XNA programming--you will not be sorry. I'll bet I could program any 70's - 80's arcade game now (when games were a blast!) except for the fact that I am a terrible artist.

Learning XNA 3.0: XNA 3.0 Game Development for the PC, Xbox 360, and Zune Overview

Do you have what it takes to become a game developer? With this hands-on book, you'll learn quickly and easily how to develop computer games with Microsoft's XNA 3.0 framework-not just for your PC, but for Xbox 360 and the Microsoft Zune as well.

Written by an experienced university-level game development instructor, Learning XNA 3.0 walks you through the framework in a clear and understandable step-by-step format. Each chapter offers a self-contained lesson with lots of illustrations and annotated examples to help you master key concepts. Once you finish the book, you'll know how to develop sophisticated games from start to finish.

  • Learn game development concepts from 2D animation to 3D cameras and effects
  • Delve into high-level shader language (HLSL) and introductory artificial intelligence concepts
  • Develop three complete and exciting games using 2D,3D and multiplayer concepts
  • Develop and deploy games to the Xbox 360 and the Microsoft Zune

While teaching XNA to beginning game developers, author Aaron Reed noticed that several key concepts were difficult for students to grasp. Learning XNA 3.0 was written specifically to address those issues. With this book, you can test your understanding and practice new skills as you go with unique "Test Your Knowledge" exercises and review questions in each chapter.

Why wait? Amaze your family and friends by building your own games for the PC, Xbox 360, and Zune-with Learning XNA 3.0.

"An outstanding book! Teaches you XNA development in a smart way, starting from 2D basics and going into 3D and shader development. What I really like is the 'peeling the onion' approach the author takes, which builds up knowledge from previous chapters." --David "LetsKillDave" Weller, CEO, Cogito Ergonomics, LLC, and former XNA program manager

Fuzzy Database Modeling (Studies in Fuzziness and Soft Computing) Overview

Some recent fuzzy database modeling advances for the non-traditional applications are introduced in this book. The focus is on database models for modeling complex information and uncertainty at the conceptual, logical, physical design levels and from integrity constraints defined on the fuzzy relations. The database models addressed here are; the conceptual data models, including the ExIFO and ExIFO2 data models, the logical database models, including the extended NF2 database model, fuzzy object-oriented database model, and the fuzzy deductive object-oriented database model. Integrity constraints are defined on the fuzzy relations are also addressed. A continuing reason for the limited adoption of fuzzy database systems has been performance. There have been few efforts at defining physical structures that accomodate fuzzy information. A new access structure and data organization for fuzzy information is introduced in this book.

Data Modeling for Information Professionals

When I was faced with creating a data model for an entire system for the first time, I instructed myself from this book for the theory, and from "The Data Modeling Handbook" by Reingruber and Gregory for the implementation details. There are many books on databases, some of them huge, which cover the same old rules about the five normal forms, etc. What absorbed my interest in this book is that it described how to model a relational database using concepts which, to me, seemed somewhat object-oriented. This reasonably-sized book was a very readable, informative exposition of the practical theory to have in mind when conceptualizing a database. The database built with the advice from this book is still going strong today...it's robust, flexible and expandable. Some credit for that goes to the lessons learned from this book.

Texturing: Concepts and Techniques (Graphics Series)

Discount Texturing: Concepts and Techniques (Graphics Series) :>>> limited time offer!

If you are a freelance professional or a student of 3D you are going to find this book very useful. Every year I have to review several books to try to find a teaching tool that is clear and concise. This book hit the spot.

The book fills two vital needs. Not only will you learn to use the color and lighting tools in your program, but if you need to get up to speed on the other software packages that are covered, this book is the answer. The book covers Maya, 3D Studio Max and Lightwave!

If you work for various clients you will find this is a great reference to help get going regardless of software used in most of the production studios you would encounter. If you are a student or have just graduated, this is a wonderful tool to keep handy and help convert from one package to another, fast. There is just enough background or theory to let you understand what you are doing with the tools, as well as actual useful examples that reinforce the instructions in the book. But, wait, that is not enough, what I really appreciate, is that Mr. Summers actually talks about the "Gotchas" and traps that seem to be inherent in all 3D packages. These are the little undocumented software "features" that usually take hours or days of experimentation, e-mails to colleagues, or digging through the underbelly of the internet, to uncover or understand.

Now two things that bother me about the book, and hence the four stars instead of five, are the name of the book and the errors found in it. Now, the errors are all minor and I never found an error that was so bad as to make a lesson unusable (like I have found in so many other books and online tutorials), but I would believe that by now publishers should be able to find good technical editors. Which leads me to the title.

The title just does not do justice to the material. There is so much more in the book then just texturing. I find the book more of a good instructional manual or reference for color and lighting in general. For example, in one lesson Mr. Summers covers not only how to use and make layered textures, but also how to create and control displacement maps and backgrounds, without being overwhelming, dryly technical, or worse, confusingly abbreviated, like so many online tutorials.

The book is not a guide on how to paint textures, there are plenty of... well I call them "efforts" to cover that arena. I suggest you find a way to carefully review those books if that is what you are after. Instead, Mr. Summers has provided a way to form that mental map of the software that will allow you to use it or learn it effectively. In today's fast paced job market and in the everchanging academic environment, this could be the edge you need to succeed.

Texturing: Concepts and Techniques (Graphics Series) Overview

The Texturing Rosetta Stone!

Texturing: Concepts and Techniques is a detailed guide to the aesthetics and design issues of creating interesting textures for digital art and 3D animation. This beautifully-illustrated, four color book teaches artists how to create stunning and convincing textures, and helps them understand the limitations that 3D animation places on creating quality imagery. It details the artistic techniques behind creating convincing textures, not just realistic or photorealistic ones, by explaining how to make viewers believe your images’ message.

The book is written for digital 3D artists who want to hone their texturing skills, and learn the "why" behind the techniques and tools. By understanding how and why surface textures are created, you’ll be able to create better work, and you’ll be prepared to solve an array of potential challenges. Each chapter provides a theoretical look at an issue and includes in-depth tutorials as needed. The tutorials and techniques don’t just show you how to recreate a texture, they take you deep into the tools of the programs so you really understand how and why they work. Although each tutorial is done using 3ds max™, LightWave 3D®, and Maya®, the concepts apply generally to almost any application. These three programs were chosen because they cover three different approaches to interface design, and they are used by a majority of 3D users.

Each product specific tutorial is highlighted with a different color, so you can quickly find your application. And the tutorials are written similarly, so that you can easily pick out the differences between the applications and get up to speed quickly on those new to you. Even if you always use your favorite program, it doesn’t hurt to see how the other programs do it. Most studios use multiple tools, so it can only help you to know how they all work! You will be far more powerful when you can assess a given project and determine which software will be the easiest, fastest, or give you the best results. By mastering the concepts and techniques presented here, you’ll learn to create convincing textures that will make your photorealistic and fantasy designs believable!

KEY FEATURES

The NEURON Book

Discount The NEURON Book :>>> limited time offer!

This book opens up new possibilities. It includes a basically simple Graphical User Interface (GUI) that can be used in Microsoft Windows (and in fact uses it for the examples). I rate it with 4 stars instead of 5, because the instructions in the examples are for those experienced with NEURON. For beginners like myself, it would help to say which buttons should be clicked and which keys pressed.

This book describes the NEURON simulation system, which can be accessed for installation and instructions at the NEURON web site. Simulation implies using the realistic Hodgkin-Huxley neuron. NEURON was initially for individual neurons, but it has now been extended to networks.

For those who believe in the classical physical science of the 19th century, including physics, chemistry, thermodynamics, and the differential equations in which they are expressed, NEURON has a special meaning. The Hodgkin-Huxley neuron extended classical physical science to a wide range of neuron types and species. The reductionist work of Eric Kandel explained many types of synapses at the molecular level, and therefore explains the connection of neurons in a network in terms of classical physical science.

Our special interest is in networks of interneurons. The most accessible mammalian networks are those in the olfactory bulb of the rat. For this special class, classical physical science, using NEURON, extends into neurobiology. It DEFINES a physically possible network structure. It is likely that evolution will have exploited at least part of this structure to extend order. This possibility is there. It is real. And it is begging for study.

This work will not require a supercomputer. From the deterministic point of view of classical physical science, there is no magic in statistically large numbers of cells. Two dozen or less should be enough to display emerging order.

The NEURON Book Overview

Assuming no previous knowledge of computer programming or numerical methods, The NEURON Book provides practical advice on how to get the most out of the NEURON software program. Although written primarily for neuroscientists, teachers and students, readers with a background in the physical sciences or mathematics and some knowledge about brain cells and circuits, will also find it helpful. Covering details of NEURON's inner workings, and practical considerations specifying anatomical and biophysical properties to be represented in models, this book uses a problem-solving approach that includes many examples to challenge readers.

Computers in Building Overview

Since the establishment of the CAAD Futures Foundation in 1985, CAAD experts from all over the world meet every two years to present and document the state of the art of research in Computer Aided Architectural Design. Together, the series provides a good record of the evolving state of research in this area over the last fourteen years. The Proceedings this year is the eighth in the series. The conference held at Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, Georgia, includes twenty-five papers presenting new and exciting results and capabilities in areas such as computer graphics, building modeling, digital sketching and drawing systems, Web-based collaboration and information exchange. An overall reading shows that computers in architecture is still a young field, with many exciting results emerging out of both greater understanding of the human processes and information processing needed to support design and also the continuously expanding capabilities of digital technology.

Marcel: Simulating the Novice Programmer (Cognition and Computing Series) Overview

This volume describes a cognitive model of student programmers, and an implementation of that model that allows student programmers to be simulated. The focus of the model is on the problem solving that students perform to generate both correct and buggy programs as well as on the individual differences that cause different students to generate different programs for the same programming task. By developing a taxonomy of student programmer knowledge; a model of student program generation; and a preliminary model of individual differences, this research contributes to a better understanding of four areas of the study of student programmers. The most important claim is that a cognitive model of student program generation fits within a properly "fleshed out" generate test-and-debug (GTD) problem solving architecture in which impasse/repair knowledge plays a key role. This research is important theoretically because it explores the use of a GTD impasse/repair problem solving architecture in a new domain, and important practically because of its educational implications for programming instructions.

Biomechanical Models for Soft Tissue Simulation (ESPRIT Basic Research Series) Overview

The Esprit project CHARM has aimed at developing a comprehensive human resource database and a set of software tools allowing the modeling of the human musculoskeletal system and the simulation of its dynamics. This book gives an original synthesis on biomechanical modeling arising from the project. Biomechanical models of soft tissue involve different kinds of mathematical relationships, and their use requires basic knowledge of the theory of nonlinear mechanics as well as of incremental finite element methods. The book provides an overview of the available models, in the light of theoretical mechanics and finite element methods, for the realistic simulation of human muscles, tendons, and skin. It will be useful to any research team beginning such a modeling project.

Contemporary Techniques in Architecture (Architectural Design) Overview

This publication addresses the most far-reaching and innovative developments in digital practice to have taken place in the last five years. It demonstrates how experimental architects are being challenged at a new rigorous intellectual level and are going beyond the strictures of the conceptual into the realm of the material. As digital techniques are starting to be successfully assimilated and translated into design methodology, they are also, for the first time being seen through to architectural realisation. This is illustrated here at the scale of space, material programme and construction.

The title includes the work of high-profile philosophers, architects and engineers, such as Manuel Delanda who wrote 1000 Years of Non-Linear History; Greg Lynn; Foreign Office Architects; and Cecil Balmond of Ove Arup, who has worked with Daniel Libeskind on his proposal for the Spiral Building, London, as well as with Philip Johnson and Studio Baad on the Chavasse Park Project featured here. Cintemorary Techniques in Archtiecture takes architectural publishing's treatment of the digital to a new level, looking at its potential in a realised form as well as a creative medium.
