If mastering 3D Studio Max is your goal, Mastering 3D Studio Max R3 makes a solid cornerstone on which to build your library. While not the easiest book to use, it is--like the software--big, rich, and full of good information. It thoroughly discusses the foundation of the topic (basic 3-D concepts, basic Max concepts, the Max interface, modeling, lighting, rendering), and contains excellent chapters on materials, lighting, rendering, and compositing.

Part VI, "Using MaxScript," is the shining star; by itself, it's worth the cost of this massive tome. Spanning well over 200 pages, this section covers the basics of MaxScript, how to manipulate scenes with MaxScript, animating with MaxScript by using controllers and keyframes, and creating plug-in scripts. If you want to squeeze the most from MaxScript, you'll be in heaven with this section.

The book falls short in two areas, unfortunately. The first is that there are no color illustrations to enhance the text on lighting, materials, and rendering. The second is that there is little information on animation and virtually none on character animation. Of the 745 pages, approximately 65 discuss creating and tweaking animation in Max. If you plan on using Max for complex animation of any kind, this book won't work for you. --Mike Caputo

The dense interface, sliding windows filled with options, and array of modeling and rendering options can form a jungle in which one is easily lost. A generous use of screenshots and a well-spaced text layout make this book easy to read, and each chapter features tutorials on the topic at hand. An important feature of the book is the set of review questions at the end of each chapter, making this an excellent curriculum guide for those teaching Max.

The enclosed CD-ROM includes all the files used in the book, including textures, but it also includes a wide variety of plug-ins, texture maps, and a document listing Web-based Max resources.

Hello all! I downloaded a 32 mbyte demo version of "Ray Dream Studio 5", and unfortunately, there was no pdf type tutorial included so only the online help could answer any potential questions. That really wasn't what I wanted so I went cruisin' through the Amazon and found this little gem. With the very reasonable price; shown above, it was worth every penny. It gives a jam-packed, 300 page introduction, and provides a solid foundation that leaves you in a good position to tackle more involved tutorials. (Perhaps - "The Ray Dream Handbook"). In particular, their coverage of the "Free Form Modeler" and the "Mesh Form Modeler" packages is exceptional. If you should test out the Ray Dream demo before buying the product, this is definetly a -BUY! By the way, if you decide to download this hefty package from the internet and have a 28.8 modem like me, do it between 12am and 7:30am!

This is the best max/Viz book I have used. I've been learning Max/viz on my own for about 4 months now and after getting this book the program has been completely demystified. Max has a really complex interface that scares people away and does not lend to trial and error and that is exactly where this book excels at. The step by step tutorials are helpful even though I'm using Viz4.
This is the best book for anyone serious about Max/Viz because it simplifies the modeling aspects a lot and even helps 3d novices to understand the gist of 3d modelling. Unlike a lot of Max books it dedicates a sizeable amount of time to modelling through tutorials. Most Max books I've come across treat modelling as a step child and dive into animation and materials. How do you animate without modelling?
Anyways I recomend this book to anyone learning Max/Viz it will prepare you for more advanced levels.
