Ive only had has this book a short time but I like it. There are lots of color images and text book like explanations.

However, the examples are somewhat dated as the book was published in 2001. Most of the sample images are showing some low poly objects, or discussing ways of representing trees which are frankly out of date. No mention that I saw so far of Vue D'esprit, which is far superior to some of the software discussed, such as VistaPro.

The authors need to update it with newer images and discuss some of the newer software, a lot of changes in 3d rendering have emerged in the last 4 years.

I doubt somebody who has been using WCS, Vue, Terragen, Maya, or any advanced 3D landscape artist would find a whole lot of use for this book, but it would be good to give an overview and explain some terminology for a beginner.

Kreft and DeLeeuw's Introducing Multilevel Modeling was written to mercifully place only limited mathematical demands on readers. It includes an interesting and readable account of intercepts and slopes as outcomes. However, in common with most other texts, it fails to accessibly develop parallels between multilevel modeling and more widely understood procedures. Instead, the authors' intent seems to be to highlight differences, perhaps to make the distinctiveness, virtues, and limitations of multilevel modeling clear to the reader. Whatever the value of their approach, I find it much easier to understand multilevel analysis as an extension of multiple regression, a connection which Kreft and DeLeeuw do not develop.

Simple examples are presented throughout the book using MLn software. Models with more than two levels are not discussed. Growth models are mentioned in passing. The authors emphasize that the constraints imposed by multilevel analysis make it best suited to relatively simple models, but I think they over-emphasize this judgment. Models much more complex than those used in this text are usefully employed and widely reported in a variety of books and journal articles.

The authors also treat close calls with regard to statistical significance as of dubious value. The reason for this is not given, and I much prefer setting an alpha level and then sticking with it, rather than second-guessing results.

This is a brief text that addresses some issues of importance in the Frequently Asked Questions section at the end of the book. It is not a comprehensive reference, but that was not its intended purpose. It reads especially well the second time through, and gives a good deal of needed attention to centering, an important topic that is glossed over in most other multilevel texts.

Organizational modelling and simulation is a relatively new field and this might explain the fact that there aren't many books about the topic. This is why this is such an important book. Not only does this book tackle the topic of organizational modelling, but the the papers are of the highest qualities. Usually edited books are not as coherent as single author books, but in this case the fact that different chapters were written by different people is an advantage. Each chapter discusses a different modelling technique that is used to explain a different issue. This variety in methods makes the book an excellent reference. I would also recommend 'Dynamics of Organizations' which is also an edited book. However, if you planned to buy just one book, then Simulating Organizations is the one that I would recommend the most.

Because I needed to learn the program thoroughly for my dissertation work, this is the fifth 3dsMax book I've bought, and it's the first that's not been overtly disappointing. If someone wants to have every little feature laid out in boring detail, there are the official materials and release notes for that. This book is the literal opposite (others suggesting otherwise have clearly not read the book in much detail).

What is most impressive here is that the book is NOT a systematic, unstructured tour of the program, dutifully covering each minor feature. Rather, it is results-oriented: if you want to accomplish X, here is how you go about it. Although it is graphically-rich and amazingly clear, it is most certainly not a comic book version of a Max book, and is clearly targeted to the sophisticated user. Even though a beginner would find the book quite useful, it should probably be bought in conjunction with a primer or a book "introducing" 3dsMax.

The writing is sprightly and, although there are spots where the editing might have been tightened, it is well above average even in that regard. In fact, if anything, the book has a crisp literary feel to it that will appeal to most readers, but may not be the style of choice for really hard-core users. Still, this is preferable to the studied dessication of nearly all the other books I've seen on the topic.

Finally, the graphical illustrations are uniformly excellent, leaving little to the imagination. I'm hoping that this team sees fit to write such a guide for the next, inevitable incarnation of the program. I for one will be advance ordering it.
